The name “Backlot” pays tribute to downtown Skokie’s (then Niles Center’s) heritage as a silent picture western back lot set between 1907 and 1915. Chicago’s Essanay Studios, the MGM of its day, frequently used Skokie because its dirt roads, saloons and wood frame buildings resembled an old prairie town. Essanay used this area frequently for shooting movies featuring gunfights, bank robberies, and cowboy and Indian skirmishes. In 1915, the Niles Center Theater (now Skokie Theater) opened and residents were finally able to see the very westerns that they had watched being filmed here. Essanay was the home of stars such as “Bronco Billy” Anderson, Ben Turpin, Wallace Beery, Gloria Swanson — and in 1914 and 1915 — Charlie Chaplin.

In 1992, Haley expanded to what is now the land base of operations for Blarney Island known as Port of Blarney. The Port of Blarney is a year 'round restaurant and during the summer is an active marina, plus the home to the Blarney Island's shuttle service. |
|
Blarney Island is located in the middle of Grass Lake, one of the many lakes on the Chain-O-Lakes, in Antioch, Illinois. However, don't worry if you don't own a boat or don't know anyone who does. Blarney Island operates a Shuttle Service to and from The Island. Depending on the day the Shuttle Service departs from the Port of Blarney to Blarney Island at the top of the hour. If you are at Blarney Island the shuttle normally departs to return to the Port of Blarney at the bottom of the hour. We provide this service for nominal fee and that fee varies depending on the day of the week. Normal shuttle hours: Mon-Wed: 12N-8p, Thu-Sat: 12N-11p, Sun: 12N-9p,

Septemberfest is a unique event as it honors Bloomingdale’s past, present and future. The best demonstration of our commitment to the future is the Bloomingdale Scholarship Competition. Started in 1987 with a single award of $400.00 to a young Bloomingdale resident, the program has grown to six and eight scholarships per year. It is open to both young men and women between the ages of 16 and 20 who are residents of incorporated Bloomingdale. This is a way for you, as a business, to show that these young adults are important and deserve support. Donations to the Joe Draghi Scholarship Fund would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for considering this request.

Blarney Island, Port O' Blarney,
27843 W. Grass Lake Rd (3.5M W. of 59), Antioch, 847-395-4122, http://www.blarneyisland.com
|
